PS3 will upscale PS1, PS2 games and DVD-Video

Details of the PlayStation 3 (PS3) 1.80 firmware update, which will be available tomorrow, show that the console will get an excellent improvement in its quest to be your home entertainment hub. The most interesting added functionality is, of course, the ability to upscale PlayStation 1 (PS1) and PlayStation 2 (PS2) games, as well as DVD-Video, to 1080p (Full HD) through HDMI on a HD display. The update also brings support for Remote Play for the PSP, meaning a user can access their PS3 from anywhere in the world where an Internet connection is available. This feature will need both 1.80 firmware on the PS3 and also PSP firmware version 3.50, which will be available at the end of the month. The update also allows users on a home network to view and play media content stored on DLNA3-enabled devices.

The woe of the little black box

In the universe of video games, it's amazing how quickly an empire can crumble. Less than a decade ago, Sony wowed gamers everywhere with news of their follow-up to the PlayStation console, then considered the height of cool for console gaming. The PlayStation 2 took Sony even higher in the console war, dominating longtime champion Nintendo and holding steady over Microsoft's Xbox.

The PS2 is still dominating eight years later with the best sales record of any console ever, totaling 115 million units sold through the end of 2006.

But their success has made them cocky as the top name in console gaming, leading them to make some costly mistakes with the new PlayStation 3. The biggest problem has been its price tag, which has been set at $600 since the PS3 was launched last November.

Spider-man 3 Wii

Both the Spider-Man 3 movie and game have recently copped a lot of flack from critics, reviewers and fans alike. The movie tries to say too much in such a short time, regretfully ruining all hope of character development and an engaging story. In the end the movie fell short from what made the previous movies before it such a spectacle to watch. A game on the other hand is not restricted by a two hour running time and in fact can be limitless as to how long it goes for and how much character development can be thrown into it. Spider-Man 3 the video game follows the same disastrous road as the movie and then some, leaving much to be desired. The Wii, PS2 and DS versions are different to their next-gen counterparts in that they were developed by Vicarious Visions. As a result the games play entirely different from the 360 and PS3 versions, however, there are some similarities including the storyline to an extent and the seemingly lifeless void that is New York City.
