Small Quake Rattles Hollister

Hollister - Hollister residents received a jolt Wednesday afternoon when a mostly harmless 4.0 earthquake struck the county, followed by two smaller quakes.

"Of course, in San Benito County you get so many earthquakes," said Steve Walter, a seismologist with the United States Geological Survey. "But this one was a little unusual."

The quake struck at 1:20pm, with its epicenter located near the intersection of Freitas and Mitchell roads, roughly three miles west of Hollister and five miles east of San Juan Bautista. It was ranked as a 4.0 or "light" earthquake on the Richter scale, with a 1.0 being a microquake and a 10 being a quake of awesome force. The quake originated 1.9 miles below the surface of the earth.

This was followed by a microquake ranking 2.8 at 1:38pm.

Unofficial Quake 4 demo sighted

Fans of the PC series will no doubt already have picked up Raven's take on all things Quake, however for those still to be tempted publisher Activision and developers id and Raven have been plotting a demo of the game, hoping to lure a few more gamers back to the Quake cause. The demo has been available from several major downloads sites for about 48-hours now, however it emerges that the demo wasn't actually ready for release, and was merely placed in id Software's FTP directory by accident. Activision are requesting that eager gamers hold fire for an official demo launch next week, a press release from the publisher revealing that the game was awaiting testing and currently has a malfunctioning multiplayer component.

By early next week, id's testers will apparently have finished testing and tweaking the demo, and it will be released online in its perfect from - complete with functioning multiplayer mode.

Graphics showdown comes to Vista on an Intel Core 2 duo system

WE SIMPLY cannot get enough of Vista. We are spending a lot of time with this still-unfinished operating system in order to give you as many impressions about it as possible. We are heading for a dead end as the Vole still doesn't want to give us a key to further unlock its mysteries but our copy will work for a week or so before it shuts itself down.

This time we wanted to give roughly equal Nvidia and ATI cards a try on Vista. We changed our test machine to an Intel Core 2 duo 6700, the only dual core we have in lab. EVGA was kind enough to give us the Nforce 680i motherboard and we decided to use the Radeon X1950 XTX and the fastest single-core Nvidia 7900 GTX card. We simply cannot get the drivers for Geforce 8800 GTX or GTS. There is definitely something fishy going on with that card on the Vole's latest OS.
