Buying guns as Christmas gifts brings up questions

The holiday season always brings many questions regarding the legal ramifications of giving hunting or sporting arms as gifts. Also worth considering is the 10-day mandatory waiting period for long guns and handguns in California. This means that purchases must be made no later than Dec. 14 to be picked up on Dec. 24.

"If a parent or grandparent wants to buy a gun as a gift for their minor child or grandchild, all paperwork is legally required to be filled out in the adult's name," said Dave Ebright at Chico Sportsmen's Den. "When the minor child reaches the age of 18 (21 for handguns), they need to go to the Department of Justice Web site to download the 'Firearm Ownership Record' form No. FD4542A.

"The form is then mailed directly to the DOJ with a $19 fee per gun, and changes the legal ownership.

Realistic war strategy worthy of a medal

Veterans of World War II video games might be tempted to write off Company of Heroes as just another retread in a genre already saturated with Battlefield: 1942, Call of Duty 2 and Medal of Honor. But listen up, private: These arent your daddys toy soldiers. The real-time strategy game begins as the Allied forces storm Omaha Beach on D-Day. From there, its up to you to guide the soldiers of Able Company through several well-defined missions as they slug it out against the Nazis across France. As players capture territory and strategic locations, the ability to deploy personnel and armored vehicles is increased, as is the ability to build support and defense fortifications. Troops and armor come in many stripes, each with its own strengths and special abilities. Riflemen, mortar squads, howitzers, snipers, halftracks, bazooka-toting rangers and Sherman tanks are just some of the weapons in the arsenal, and most are upgradable.

Nintendo gearing up for American Wii launch

"Sound revolutionised movies, colour reinvigorated television and now Wii transforms video games forever." Those are the words from Nintendo as history's "most interactive home video game system" launches next week in the Americas with 20 new games that reinvent and reshape the gaming experience. Wii Sports, a collection of five sports games, comes with the system. A total of 33 new Wii games will be available before the end of the year, along with downloadable access to another 30 Virtual Console classics.

"The most important advance for video games in the last 10 years was the introduction of Super Mario 64, which ushered in the era of true 3D gaming," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "Wii will have the same effect on how players connect to their games, and it is made for everyone.
