Fishing Report for Week of Nov. 17-23

1. Anaheim Lake has been a top pick for rainbows thanks to heavy weekly plants, including 1,500 pounds of surplus male broodstock last week. While there are no plants this week (the lake will close Sunday evening), fishing permits are half price, boat rentals are half price, and there's no limit on the trout through the close of the season Sunday. Lake operators would rather have anglers catch all the trout in the lake than simply let them perish when the lake is drained. For information, contact the tackle shop at 714-854-9193.

2. Willow Beach finally turned on for big stripers this past week (and we sent you to Skinner, which is also a good bet). Anglers hurling the big A..C. Plugs or similar lures and swimbaits landed stripers to 30 pounds with a number of fish from 18 to 25 pounds.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

SILVERWOOD Excellent trout action at the dam and in the coves on Power Bait with fish to 4-0. The catfish are also good to excellent, in spite of the cool weather, with the bite best at the dam and in Cleghorn on anchovies and or chicken livers. Lots of limits. Top cat was a 13-8 landed by Steve Quinones, Palmdale, on an anchovy. Striper bite fair on swimbaits and Kastmasters. Most fish to 4-0. Robert Palmer, Ontario, caught an 8-0 striper on an anchovy. Largemouth to 4-8 are fair, also showing on swimbaits off the dock and by the dam. Bluegill and carp slow to fair from shores in most coves. Another 2,500 lbs. of rainbow trout from 1-8 to 2-0 were planted this week. Information: marina (760) 389-2299; state park (760) 389-2281; Silverwood Country store (760) 389-2423.

BIG BEAR LAKE Cold.

Fishing Report for Dec. 1, 2006

1. Santa Ana River Lakes reopened Nov. 24 with excellent trout action, and there were 18 fish over 15 pounds that were caught in just two days. The biggest rainbow landed was a 22.8-pounder, and more of the big trout are going to be planted this week. The water is very clear. Lake manager Jim Davis says it's the clearest he's ever seen, so the trout have to be finessed. Most successful anglers are fishing 2-pound test line and either small trout jigs or plastics or one of the many floating baits doused up with scent. Information: the tackle shop at 714-632-7830 or go to www.fishinglakes.com

2. While the bite isn't wide open, Lake Perris has been quietly cranking out stringers of nice bluegill for anglers fishing off the marina docks and for boat anglers working rockpiles off the island.

Good Old Nightcrawlers

Here's a question about fishing I don't hear very often: Do I ever use anything other than artificial lures to catch fish? While mountain anglers can do quite well with lures, good old fashioned crawlers, aka nightcrawlers, are one of the best live baits you can use for a wide variety of fish. I've caught trout, bluegill, crappie, catfish, stripers and both kinds of bass while fishing crawlers. Take a wild guess how big crawler-caught fish can get. How about a record 20.15-pound largemouth bass? California's first 20 plus was caught at Lake Miramar by Dave Zimmerlee on crawlers. Two other record bass-a 17.8 pounder at Lake Berryessa and a 18.11 pounder at San Pablo-were fooled by a hook full of crawlers. One of the biggest game fish swimming in our mountain waters, the channel cats-fish from under 10 pounds, the best size if you are taking some home to eat, to the 30 to 40+ pound catch, photograph and release trophies-really love the crawlers.

Hells Angels member gunned down at strip club

VAUGHAN, Ont. -- A man charged with the second-degree murder of a Hells Angels member is to appear in court Sunday.

The Toronto Star is reporting that Frank Lenti, 59, is a member of the rival Bandido gang and the manager of the Vaughan, Ont., strip club where the shooting of David Buchanan took place.

In addition to second-degree murder, Lenti is charged with attempted murder and weapons offences.

Buchanan, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene early Saturday morning in the shooting that wounded two other bikers.

A prospect member of the gang was taken to hospital with serious injuries and a third man, a full-patch member, was later found to have admitted himself to hospital where he was treated for minor wounds and released.

The Hells Angels' news portal Real Deal News says Buchanan was at Club Pro celebrating his birthday.
