While Naughty Dog's off proving it can make edgier games than ever, that's old hat for Insomniac. After years of cuddly fire-breathing dragons and platformers with double-entendres, Insomniac moved onto some fairly dark material with Resistance: Fall of Man. It paid off, as the PS3 launch title has become something of a rallying point for PlayStation Network gameplay.

But even as Nathan Hale battled the Chimera threat, we couldn't help but think of Ratchet & Clank. Seriously, even in an alternate 1951, those guns seemed like the crazy inventions that we saw in the Insomniac team's PS2 blockbusters. With that in mind, we were pleased to get our first look at the next-gen debut of a series that has sold millions of copies to parents who had no idea what the subtitles actually meant.

God of War II director talks sequels and PSPs

In an interview with Shacknews, God of War II director Cory Barlog has explained a little bit about the back story behind the upcoming God of War: Chains of Olympus which is due out in late 2007. A lot of stuff we knew already, such as that the game is set in the ten year period preceding the events of the original game while Kratos was trying (and failing) to rid himself of his guilt at killing his wife and child.

However, Barlog is also keen to point out that the game isn't just a prequel just levered in for the sake of it; events in the plot of Chains of Olympus should explain things that happen later in God of War and God of War II. I'm more interested in how the controls will work on the handheld though. Two things could prevent it from being quite as fun as the earlier console outings.

Dad the Guitar Dud

I have not gotten to watch much TV or DVDs in the last couple of weeks, because my daughter just discovered Guitar Hero II. I never really associated my sweet 15-year-old with metal thrashing and head banging, but there you are. As soon as she got a hold of the Xbox 360 version of the game that lets you play fantasy guitar without embarrassment she and her friends have been hooked. I have to say that the 360 version is far superior to the current PS2 iteration. The wide screen HD visuals are good, and having the full surround sound pump through the home theater is a blast. For the uninitiated, Guitar Hero replaces the usual game controller with a plastic guitar that sports five colored buttons on the fret board. As the familiar tunes play you have to hit the colored buttons in synch with the notes as they descend on screen.
