Down on the farm - Sky Tower pilot talks

Pilot David Turnock was so devastated at his marriage break-up that he threatened to fly into Auckland's Sky Tower on election night last year. In his first interview, he talks to Nicola Boyes about depression, lost love and being behind bars.

The videos on former pilot David Turnock's office shelf are predictable: Top Gun and An Officer and a Gentleman - dashing aviators who won the girl.

He has seen them dozens of times and, at 34, Turnock is New Zealand's own aviation celebrity of sorts. He lost his girl and nearly his life on national television on election night last year.

September 17 was not significant, he says, it just happened to be the day he stole a plane from Ardmore Airport, threatened to fly into Auckland's Sky Tower and finally ditched into the sea off St Heliers.

What Iraqis are blogging about...and trying to live through.

Here is the link to make it larger if need be, take a LONG look at this map and realize it is neighborhoods fighting neighborhoods, and many people being forced out of the mixed neighborhoods to create more territory for either the Sunni or Shiite majorities that result from such actions.

This is what the Iraqi's are blogging about, not kfed not Stupid Hollywood divorces, or how bad it was that the Play station was not available, but how to fight and try to survive a civil war.

Especially not the stupid head up the ass ideas the reichwingnuts think should be further inflicted on these people. People like Rush who think we should just Nuke them all

A civil war Bush denies, but these people see as the reality on the ground.

Stay the course in any guise Bush puts out, AND HE WILL, is dooming these people to more weeks and months of the hell described below.

Blogging Between the Lines

The mainstream media have fallen in love with blogs, launching them on everything from politics to life in Las Vegas to bowling. But does the inherent tension between the blogospheres anything-goes ethos and the standards of traditional journalism mean this relationship is doomed?

By Dana Hull
Dana Hull (danahull@gmail.com) is a reporter at the San Jose Mercury News.

The San Antonio Express-News has a bowling blog. The News Tribune in Tacoma, Washington, has a fly-fishing blog. A pet blog is popular at the Commercial Appeal in Memphis. Several newspapers have launched parenting blogs.

The Fourth Estate has fallen fast and furiously in love with blogs, from news-driven ones about professional sports teams, real estate, crime, Hurricane Katrina, immigration and local and national politics to zanier ones that dive deep into niche subcultures.

'Tony Hawk's Project 8' tops latest games for new PlayStation 3

Over the years, readers have said their favorite video-game reviews are the ones in which I compare games to pop culture or ex-girlfriends (which ones are high-maintenance, etc.). But it's the holidays, so I need to stay in news-you-can-use mode. Hang in there, fans of dating parallels. Anyway, here's a straight-up look at more releases for the brand-spanking-new PlayStation 3.

"Ridge Racer 7": Once again, you drive super-sleek race cars at 200 mph and beyond, through concrete jungles of cities, under dark tunnels and around mountain curves. As usual, you make hairpin turns by briefly letting off the gas, then stomping on the accelerator while sliding around corners. The courses are pretty, though many seem like leftovers from "Ridge Racer 6." The real value may be in racing up to 14 players online.

Helping the needy as a matter of faith

For eight years, an unusual group of people has regularly gathered for an unofficial breakfast meeting with Forest Grove school Superintendent Jack Musser to discuss issues related to families and youth.

The group, made up of local pastors, is unusual in that it represents both liberal and conservative churches.

In Washington County, many interdenominational groups are unofficially divided: Liberal Christians tend to end up doing things with other liberal Christians, while conservative Christians are likely to work with one another. The many Christians in the middle mix with either group.

But in the county, there are many opportunities for Christians with diverse views to come together. In the end, some say, broad-based interdenominational and even interfaith efforts can benefit not just the community but Christianity itself.

Mega event organisers owe responsibility to megapolis

It seems that festivities and recreational and cultural activities in the metropolis have not come to an end with the conclusion last week of arms and military equipment exhibition - the Ideas - at the Expo Centre.

Also at the weekend, the dwellers of this city were given an enthralling opportunity to participate in the fabulous arms display, as the entertainment activity continued at the Peoples Football Stadium in Mauripur till last Saturday night. But much has been left to the distaste of the public as they were not enchanted and wooed enough to forget the hardships and inconvenience they were subjected to during the Ideas expo.

Following the conclusion of Ideas, we have been seeing announcements for other extravaganzas and exhibitions on cultural arena, like wedding ceremonies at the same Expo Centre, the ensuing Kara Film Festival, an education exhibition for the youth seeking higher education in the UK, and musical evenings at Arts Council and Press Club, and last but not the least the Sindh governors announcement for holding Hamara Karachi Festival to commemorate the platinum jubilee of the old KMC building on main MA Jinnah Road.
