Dark Messiah patched ( News )

Valve reports that there's a patch available through Steam for Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, which should sort out a number of tedious bugs. And if you bought the game in a box rather than an internet, you can download a patch for that too.

So what's sorted? Well, here are a few highlights: "Indestructible shields are now really indestructible." "Fixed teleporting that could occur when using lockpick." "Fixed invisible wall present on level 7." And "Fixed Percy getting stuck in a window."

Which reminds me - Rob moved house last week, and, well, if you couldn't get a sofa in through a front door, would your first instinct be to try and raise it through the first floor window using ropes? Somebody should patch him.

Final Fantasy V Advance ( Review )

Final Fantasy V is the lost SNES title in the series. Unless you bought the original Japanese cart and a handwritten translation, or tracked down the rare PSone release (with debilitating loading times) in Final Fantasy Anthology, then this is your first chance to play it legally. Released at a time when odd numbered Final Fantasy games emphasised the battle system and even numbered titles focussed on the story, you'll immediately notice the paucity of dialogue here.

GSC Game World Brings Latest to Leading Online Distribution ...

November 9, 2006 -- Valve and GSC Game World, makers of the legendary Cossacks series and highly anticipated S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, announce an agreement to make Chapter I of the Heroes of Annihilated Empires trilogy game available to the 10 million gamers connected to Steam.

"We are very happy to start working with Valve to distribute our latest creation via this mighty online distribution platform. This agreement is an ideal compliment to our self-publishing start-up, and we look forward to forging a very fruitful relationship with Valve, both now and in the future," said Sergiy Grygorovych, CEO at GSC Game World.

Heroes of Annihilated Empires, an innovative and expansive new title from veteran game studio, GSC Game World, combines two of the industry's most popular genres - RTS and RPG.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl ( First Impressions )

While being in any zone at all may be something new to most of the inhabitants of THQ's happy-happy-fun-bus, for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl developer GSC Game World the feeling's all too familiar. Estimates vary on how long the FPS has been in production, but "five years" is a safe bet. Heavily delayed – an original release date of 2004 sailed past with barely a whimper – many had thought the project lost until it reared its head at Games Convention in August. THQ has faith. Shipping 80 journalists to Ukraine from literally all over the world is no laughing matter. But the questions are obvious: can the game Eurogamer editor Kristan Reed described as "staggeringly beautiful" in April 2004 really cut it in a post-Half-Life 2 world? Hasn't S.T.A.L.K.E.R.'s time been and gone?

The answers aren't as easily available.

Cheap Eastern Europe development "gone"

According to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl project lead Anton Bolshakov, the days of cut-price development in Eastern Europe are well over, with project costs now lifted into line with the rest of the gaming world.

"The time when development here was cheap is now gone, so our budgets for development are now comparable to European or American budgets," said GSC Game World's Bolshakov, speaking in Ukrainian capital Kiev at a showing of his near-final game.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, an open-ended FPS, has been much delayed. The title was originally pegged for a 2004 release and is now slated to hit in March 2007. An extended development period of at least five years has been tough for the company, despite its traditionally low-cost location.

"For any developer it's important to have a big, well-established partner like THQ to work with," said Bolshakov.

Falling Out

Anton Bolshakov, project lead on S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl, laughs sternly at the question. How exactly did Ukrainian developer GSC Game World feel when publisher THQ stepped in two years ago to "rescue" the shooter's development?

"All developers are dreamers by default," he says. "So having a publisher look into things helps a lot to speed things up, to move properly along a development schedule: it's very important to have this cooperation. Especially for S.T.A.L.K.E.R."

Appearing at an event in Ukraine's capital, Kiev - at least the second time the world's press has visited the developer at THQ's expense in the last three years - Bolshakov is showing the game in its final structure for the first time.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a big title, mapping the entire 30km exclusion zone around the fated Reactor 4 of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Looks D.A.T.E.D.

November 07, 2006 - Eurogamer kicked some some hands-on impressions of S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl. They have an interview up with GSC Gameworld about it also. Here's the kicker: There's no disguising it: S.T.A.L.K.E.R. does looks dated. The level sees you start with a squad of NPCs taking out snipers, and the modelling on your compatriots could never be described as "cutting edge". But we're talking here about a completely open-ended game with 60 hours of play and a massive area. It certainly looks better than adequate, just "2005" as opposed to "2006". Remember Operation: Flashpoint? Graphics didn't matter then, did they? .

STALKER Nearly Ready?

One game that's constantly tottering between Vaporware and "When it's done territory" has been Ukranian developer, GSC Game World's FPS/RPG, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl. Initially called, Oblivion Lost, this game was to be released in 2003, but somewhere down the line, some of the gooey stuff really hit the fan, and the game's not seen the light of day even after three years.
