Ridge Racer 7 Review

Another PlayStation launch, another Ridge Racer. Or, should we say, RIDGE RACER! The PS3's installment offers up some interesting new gameplay options but, for the most part, there's not a lot that's different about Ridge Racer 7. That's good for some, not so much for others.

Since its inception, Ridge Racer has been all about arcade racing. This is most certainly not a sim, so all you Gran Turismo fans can look somewhere else for inspiration. The name of the game here is drifting and boosting, zooming across a variety of cityscapes and countrysides with a first place finish in mind.

This mechanic returns in Ridge Racer 7. In fact, other than one notable addition on the control side of things, the gameplay is almost identical to last year's Ridge Racer 6. So, if you played through that one and didn't really enjoy the ride, you're gonna wanna skip this one.

Samurai Warriors 2

Samurai Warriors 2 is an experiment in how many times a rat will hit a lever before it gets sick of the pellets. The action is simple: You're a hero tearing across a battlefield, cutting a swath through enemy infantry—and that's all you do, mission after mission, hour after hour. Aside from a few tactical details and boss fights, you're just a killing machine, mashing a single button as quickly as possible.

Ninety-Nine Nights recently tried to put a more epic, dramatic spin on the same concept, but Samurai Warriors 2 is as garish as a pizza-joint pinball machine—and much more fun for it. Distractions and bonuses keep whizzing by, from the steady stream of power-ups to the running B-movie dialogue with your comrades—like Keiji Maeda, who talks like a surfer and sports a hairdo like an electrocuted shih tzu.

Thumbs Up for PlayStation 3

PlayStation 3 got thumbs up by some amateur gamers and technology aficionados. The New York Sun asked its night photography editor, Paul "Knuckles" Kim, photography editor Konrad Fiedler, information technology manager Mark Barran, senior designer Michael Chatham, and a designer in the business production department, Ryan Ganley, last evening to play or watch Playstation 3 on a large high-definition screen set up in a conference room.

Mr. Kim was disappointed at how long the PS3 took to load and update the system software so that the games could run. But after that took place, he exclaimed, "Graphically, it's much, much better" than what he had seen before. Mr. Barran said PlayStation 3 was more of a home entertainment center, with a built-in multi-card reader making it easier to store pictures, MP3 music, and so on.

Zimbabwe: Compromise Must Reign Over Pride

History and pride seem to be the major ingredients stoking the North Korea nuclear impasse.

The North Korean nuclear issue is an example of how the history of hate can plunge the world into a catastrophic war. While history is supposed to make people more humane and tolerant of each other, the nuclear crisis in Asia is pointing directly in the opposite direction. For the second time in history, the Korean crisis threatens another major world war. Two proud Asian giants -- Japan and China -- have always been at the centre of the Korean crisis. Some historians trace the conflict back to more than 2 000 years ago. China invaded Korea in 1122 BC and later settled at what is now Pyongyang (North Korea) while Japan invaded the peninsula in the first century AD and settled at present-day Pusan (South Korea).

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

SILVERWOOD Excellent trout action at the dam and in the coves on Power Bait with fish to 4-0. The catfish are also good to excellent, in spite of the cool weather, with the bite best at the dam and in Cleghorn on anchovies and or chicken livers. Lots of limits. Top cat was a 13-8 landed by Steve Quinones, Palmdale, on an anchovy. Striper bite fair on swimbaits and Kastmasters. Most fish to 4-0. Robert Palmer, Ontario, caught an 8-0 striper on an anchovy. Largemouth to 4-8 are fair, also showing on swimbaits off the dock and by the dam. Bluegill and carp slow to fair from shores in most coves. Another 2,500 lbs. of rainbow trout from 1-8 to 2-0 were planted this week. Information: marina (760) 389-2299; state park (760) 389-2281; Silverwood Country store (760) 389-2423.

NIVEA FOR MEN Partners With Ubisoft to Integrate Products Into Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent(TM)

The video game industry has gained significant momentum over the past few decades. When games like Nintendo's Duck Hunt(R) and Mario Brothers(R) were first introduced to the small screen they captured the attention of young boys and occupied them through their teen years. Now, these boys have grown up yet haven't neglected their adolescent hobby. Men are now rushing home from work to spend the remainder of their evenings with a cold drink and a bag of chips to sit in front of the TV so that they can play video games. According to the Entertainment Software Association(TM) 62 percent of American men are also part of the game-playing population at an average age of 33.

According to the Yankee Group, an independent technology and consulting firm, $34 million was generated from in-game advertising revenue in 2004 and $562.6 million is forecasted by 2009.
