SEGA Rally Revo Updated Impressions (Xbox 360)

Its safe to say the SEGA has the arcade racing thing down pat. Franchises like OutRun and SEGA GT have solidified the massive gaming company in the motorsports realm over the years. You can also toss their SEGA Rally series into the mix, as it has been a pillar in the off-road racing scene for over a decade. Instead of re-hashing old SEGA Rally content from years past, the powers-that-be thought it would be best to update the IP for the next generation of super hardware. SEGA is so dedicated to upgrading their off-road racing franchise, in fact, that they created a UK-based studio for the task (and future tasks based on OutRun and SEGA GT IPs we hope). The result will be SEGA Rally Revo; a mud-slingin, next-gen racer thats due out this holiday season. We were curious about how SEGA might approach an older arcade franchise running in the next-gen.

Sega Rally Revo Impressions

Sega Rally Revo was a real surprise for me. I hadn't really been following the game's development since its announcement so when I saw it, I was impressed.

Revo is, of course, following in the footsteps of a long illustrious line of arcade racers, the first of which hit in 1995. When the recently formed Sega Racing Studio set to turning this beloved arcade racer into a next-gen title they looked at the success of the arcade cabinets and tried to decide what they wanted to focus on for the console version. What they came away with was the vibrant graphics, the variable handling and the close racing, the way that in the game you always seemed just about to lose or win up until that last second of the race.

What they came up with was a graphically impressive rally racer that seems to hit a lot of sweet spots.

'SEGA Rally Revo' (PS3/X360/PC) - 4 New Screens

Vehicle selection affects driving strategy in SEGA Rally Revo, as race course surfaces dynamically deform upon repeated contact with vehicle tires and changing weather effects. SEGA Rally Revo features a variety of fully deformable surfaces, from gravel-littered tracks and smooth tarmac roads, to snow-covered mountain passes. This means no two laps will ever be the same, and drivers can skillfully lower their lap times as they hurtle their chosen world-renowned rally vehicles down photo-realistic courses only made possible on next-generation hardware.

Driving skills will also be tested by SEGA Rally Revo's advanced AI which allows NPC drivers to dynamically adapt their driving style to the varied racing surfaces. Players can enjoy a comprehensive single-player campaign as they travel the globe racing the best drivers in the world.

Interviews with Assassins

Last month, I visited Ubisoft Montreal and interviewed Assassin's Creed Creative Director Patrice Desilets and Producer, Jade Raymond for the Official PlayStation Magazine. My feature appears in this month's issue (the one with GTA IV on the cover), but there was lots of interview I couldn't use in the piece. So here it is.

Ubisoft's visually awesome action adventure, set during the violent maelstrom of the Third Crusade, is an enormously ambitious project. The player takes an ambiguous role in the proceedings, an operative of the original assassin sect, your job is to kill nine men with controlling interests in the conflict - but are they part of a larger conspiracy? Think Leon meets the Da Vinci Code in downtown Damascus.

It's an interesting concept, made more intriguing by regular hints that this might all be a virtual reality simulation, or a 'genetic memory'.
