Sharp distinction

Playing the ethnic stereotype is just not Lucy Lius style. She goes for roles with a sharp edge like a pregnant woman in her new AIDS drama, writes TAN DAWN WEI.

IN the independent AIDS drama 3 Needles, Lucy Liu has to look heavily pregnant, wear no make-up and speak impeccable Mandarin.

It is not like anything she is used to, but she fulfils all three requirements the last one, imperfectly but competently.

Her role as an ignorant AIDS-stricken black marketeer in rural China who collects blood for sale from peasants is the first time that she has delivered her lines entirely in Mandarin in any of her TV shows and movies.

Liu may be Chinese-American, but for anyone who has cared to track her career, the 38-year-old has not exactly been playing the ethnic card in Hollywood.

FLIGHT OF FANTASY: 'Dark Messiah' brings a burst of energy and imagination to 'Might & Magic' series

Lots of games attempt new and interesting concepts, but relatively few successfully implement them into actual fun gameplay. Fewer still manage to gel these innovations with tried-and-true ideas to form a seamless, well-executed whole.

"Dark Messiah of Might & Magic" is one of these rare titles. The core first-person melee combat is incredibly solid, and the exploration, storytelling and character growth are integrated brilliantly to create a unique and compelling experience.

The lengthy single-player game (roughly 20 hours our first time) is outstanding. Whether you focus your talents in stealth, magic, melee or archery, the wide variety of situations that protagonist Sareth finds himself in provide plenty of room to get creative with "Dark Messiah's" combat system.

Free-throw woes doom Vikings

FREMONT — If the Irvington High girls basketball team expects to have a good season, the Vikings know what it's going to take — made free throws.

In the consolation championship of the Irvington Holiday Invitational, the Vikings shot just 3-for-17 from the line in a 46-43 loss to Fremont of Sunnyvale in the third-place game Saturday.

This comes two nights after the Vikings (2-2) went 8-for-22 from the line in a double-overtime loss to Santa Cruz.

The defending tournament champion, Irvington, got a game-high 16 points from Yojing Chi. Lindsay McCarthy added 10.

Fremont came out hot, scorching Irvington for 16 points in the first quarter and 17 in the second to take a 33-15 lead at the half.

Fremont left the door open, though. The Firebirds went cold in the second half, striking for a mere 13 points.

Her er mer fakta: Since the dawn of time, the inhabitants of Nelw have relied on mighty elemental wizards to keep order. But the invention of steam power has overturned this ancient social order. Disillusioned by the introduction of new technology, certain sections of the population have turned instead to the power of nature. Taking advantage of the conflicts tearing apart the factions of nature and science, the forces of darkness lay siege to the magic domains in an attempt to seize power.
