Assault Heroes Hands-on Preview (Xbox 360)

Thanks to the runaway success of Xbox Live Arcade, it's now easier than ever for small developers to get their games into the hands of gamers. Before, the only cost-effective option was to create a "casual" game for the PC, offer up a trial version, and just hope that enough people downloaded the full version to break even. While that's certainly still a viable (and attractive) option, XBLA gives these developers much more visibility than they would have had "back in the old days." Every person who gets onto Live will see their game, and there's much less competition than there is on many of the popular gaming portals on the web. We recently had a chance to check out Assault Heroes, a game that may just be the next big thing on Xbox Live Arcade. Developed by Wanako Studios and published by Sierra Online, Assault Heroes features the type of intense, top-down action that was introduced to the world by games like Smash TV.

Lloyd Webber Aims To Take Maria Tv Contest To Us

British theatre impresario SIR ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER is hoping to revive his hit THE SOUND OF MUSIC reality TV contest in America. The Tony Award-winning composer and producer won both acclaim and scorn when he launched a nationwide search for a new MARIA for the London revival of the RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN musical in Britain earlier this year (06), and now he's keen to do the same again in America. Already among the judges slated to be part of a similar project to find talented wannabes to star in an upcoming GREASE revival, Lloyd Webber admits he's in negotiations to turn his HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE MARIA TV show into a US hit. Writing in his online diary, the CATS composer states: "I go to New York, then on to Los Angeles, and we're going to be talking about the Maria programme over there." Lloyd Webber is currently producing the smash hit London revival of The Sound Of Music, which stars TV contest winner CONNIE FISHER.

Privates gone public

One year for Christmas I told my parents I really, really wanted a Kenner Smash-Up Derby set. I'm not really sure why I wanted it, I just did. The commercials made it look cool. Everyone at school was talking about it. It was Smash-Up Derby or nothing.

My parents (actually, it was probably Santa) gave in to my pleading and got me Smash-Up Derby.

And y'know what? I didn't like it. The cars didn't explode apart like they did on TV. The ramps were flimsy plastic and tended to slide around on the floor. And it was nigh-on impossible to get the Beetle and the pickup truck to hit head-on. Overall, it was a crushing disappointment that I remember to this day.

And yet I would happily go back and relive that moment a hundred times over if it could make me forget those pictures of Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.
