GameRanger goes Universal

GameRanger, the popular Mac game finding and chat service, is now available as a Universal binary. The version 4.6 release is in circulation; GameRanger users will be automatically updated on their next connection.

GameRanger is used by commercial, shareware and freeware games as a game matching service — GameRanger users can join or host online games, access master lists of servers, and chat with each other. The service is offered in a basic free form or a premium tier that provides additional capabilities, such as in-game voice chat, a ranking system, buddy list groups and more.

Besides Universal binary support for PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, GameRanger 4.6 also contains several other changes, including support for Age of Empires III, Civilization IV: Warlords and Imperial Glory, improved network transport system for games including Raven Shield, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake, and more.

Live Music Archive downloads by Various Artists

I have been spending the past week downloading music from the Live Music Archive at www.archive.org. For anyone unfamiliar with this website, it provides free and legal downloads of concerts by musicians and bands that allow their performances to be taped (either by audience members or directly through the soundboard) and posted for not-for-profit use on this site. Currently the site contains 39,819 gigs and counting. It is a cybergoldmine for music lovers. The majority of the gigs are from the jamband category (the Grateful Dead head the list with 2,816 concerts); however, a careful search will reward anyone looking for something other than extended guitar noodling. Here are three excellent examples:

The Mermen

The San Francisco-based Mermen are, on the surface, a surf band.

Sonic Riders Hits PC in US, UK

Already available on the GameCube, PlayStation 2 and the original Xbox, SEGA has announced that Sonic Riders is now available for the PC in both the U.S. and the U.K. for the perhaps unsurprising (the game was highly criticized) budget price of $19.95 (USD). You can read more about the game below:

Dressage riders ready for FEI World Challenge

Two days of warm-up competition at the National Equestrian Centre has indicated keen competition for today's Lion Foundation FEI World Challenge at the National Equestrian Centre, Taupo.

International judges Britta Bergsten (Sweden) and Lois Yukins (USA) have already judged New Zealand's competition in Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taipei, and will assess the competitors at Taupo against those performances. The event is designed to give emerging countries in the sport, for whose riders competing overseas is difficult if not impossible, the opportunity to perform before international judges and other countries without leaving home shores.

The Prix St Georges Challenge promises to be a showdown between Penny Castle (Palmerston North) on national title holder, Veritas, Vanessa Way (New Plymouth) on the consistent Winter's Realm and Blenheim's Laurel Cross on 2005 NZ Medium champion Winter Acacia.

Video games: Nintendo's Wii system

The folks at Nintendo are either crazy or crazy genius.

What else can you say about a company that unveils its flagship video game console the same week that global behemoth Sony launches the PS3, a marketing juggernaut that spurred frenzied bidding on eBay, multi-day camping trips to electronics retailers and made people willing to shoot and steal to get their hands on what may be the most highly anticipated video gaming machine ever made?

The Hoffa Files: How This Tough Guy Made Las Vegas

It's one of the most enduring mysteries in American history. What happened to labor leader Jimmy Hoffa? The FBI believes Hoffa was murdered by mobsters back in 1975, in part because of what he knew about the mob in Las Vegas.

Now, someone has stepped forward to tell what really happened on the day Hoffa disappeared. The man who's talking says he's the person who pulled the trigger.

It isn't too often that a Mafia hitman comes forward to reveal details about murders carried out for organized crime. The disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa was one of the biggest crimes of the last century, one with roots right here in Las Vegas.

The person who killed the teamster boss was someone Hoffa trusted. And in a deathbed confession, the hitman explained why Hoffa had to go.
