Aussie game charts: April 23-29

T-U-R-T-L-E power reigned supreme in Australia last week, with the latest PlayStation 2 adventures of Donatello and the gang taking the top spot in the overall Australian game charts for the week of April 23 to April 29.

TMNT took the number-one spot from Diddy Kong Racing for the Nintendo DS, which slipped back a place to land in second position, according to data trackers GfK Australia. Nintendo games had a strong showing in the overall top 10, with five entrants including Sonic and the Secret Rings and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii, and Bratz: Forever Diamondz and Animal Crossing: Wild World for the Nintendo DS.

The PlayStation 3 port of last year's role-playing game hit The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion had a strong debut Down Under, coming in at fourth spot in the overall charts.

Some secrets are best left untold

Gamers looking for a return to Sonic the Hedgehog's glory days should be wary about picking up Sonic and The Secret Rings for the Nintendo Wii. Though superior to most of Sonic's recent outings, the game ultimately falls short. Navigating Sonic through some big, colourful and chaotic levels is fun, but as the tasks become trickier, the controls will have you tripping over your own thumbs. To make matters worse, you'll have to endure an incredibly cheesy story.Storylines have never been a Sonic staple. This time around, however, Sonic is all about story - the Arabian Nights, a collection of stories, in fact. Pages of the book are being erased by the evil genie Erazor Djinn and Sonic is recruited by a good genie to save the land. The storytelling is somewhat irritating because it is done through comic book storyboarding and corny voice acting. There are seven levels that you will encounter in the game, but each employs varying objectives and multiple run-throughs to lengthen the game.

PS2 Review: Tony Hawk Downhill Jam

A strange mix of EA Sports Big SSX series and long forgotten, under appreciated ESPN Extreme Games on the PS1, Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam is a complete departure for Activision's skateboarding franchise. This new spin on the genre is a fantastic run that feels fresh, unique, and different enough to make it a worthy addition to Tony Hawk's paycheck. Instead of a focus on absurd goals and tricks, Downhill Jam is a pure racing title at its heart. The superb sense of speed across a rapidly changing level design is the addictive hook that keeps you playing. The basic trick system is in place, and occasionally crucial depending on the style of the challenge.

The single player game is about advancing through different tiers of challenges, earning new boards to increase stats and gaining new medals to level up.

EA Talks SimCity DS & Wii

The SimCity series has built up a strong reputation over the years, but mainly on the PC. However, thanks to a helping hand from Nintendo, the Maxis classic was reworked for the SNES and following that there was no turning back, with SimCity 2000 eventually making its way to that system, as well as even the GBA. However, now EA has created a fresh edition, based on SimCity 3000 for the DS and Cubed was lucky enough to catch up with the development team to talk about this latest project, SimCity DS. Cubed: First of all, could you please introduce yourself and explain what your role is on this project? Takahiro Murakami, Producer, EA Japan: My name is Takahiro Murakami, Producer at EA Japan. I have been involved with the development of SimCityDS since the planning stage, overseeing overall direction, development, and production.
