A Medal of Honor Worthy

In the ever changing landscape of video gaming, one thing will always stay constantly stocked on retail shelves, World War II games. While the Call of Duty franchise from Activision has thus far roamed the next-generation turf freely, EA will be bringing in the troops early next year with Medal of Honor: Airborne for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. To learn more about this possible Call of Duty killer, Executive Producer Patrick Gilmore was kind enough to answer some questions about the upcoming title and let us in what we should expect. What is Airborne all about? The story focus of the game is on the odyssey of the Airborne forces through World War II. There are five historic operations, Husky, Avalanche, Neptune, Market Garden and Varsity. As Private Travers and Pathfinder Eddie La Pointe, you will jump into each one, playing through Italy, France and, finally, Germany following the march to Berlin that effectively ended the European campaign.

EA Ships Superman Returns: The Videogame

Just in time for the holidays, Electronic Arts shipped SUPERMAN RETURNS: THE VIDEOGAME, licensed by Warner Bros. Interactive Ent., on Nov. 20, 2006. The game, which features storylines from both the Warner Bros. Pictures' film SUPERMAN RETURNS and more than 60 years of DC Comics' content, was developed by EA's Tiburon Studio in Orlando, the award-winning studio that develops MADDEN NFL. SUPERMAN RETURNS: THE VIDEOGAME is an open-world superhero title for the Xbox 360, PlayStation2, Xbox and Nintendo DS. The version shipping for the Game Boy Advance is titled, SUPERMAN RETURNS: FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE. The first multi-dimensional open world game allows players to go anywhere in the 80 square miles of Metropolis, from the street up into the clouds. New flight mechanics give players full command of all aerial maneuvers.

Assault Heroes Hands-on Preview (Xbox 360)

Thanks to the runaway success of Xbox Live Arcade, it's now easier than ever for small developers to get their games into the hands of gamers. Before, the only cost-effective option was to create a "casual" game for the PC, offer up a trial version, and just hope that enough people downloaded the full version to break even. While that's certainly still a viable (and attractive) option, XBLA gives these developers much more visibility than they would have had "back in the old days." Every person who gets onto Live will see their game, and there's much less competition than there is on many of the popular gaming portals on the web. We recently had a chance to check out Assault Heroes, a game that may just be the next big thing on Xbox Live Arcade. Developed by Wanako Studios and published by Sierra Online, Assault Heroes features the type of intense, top-down action that was introduced to the world by games like Smash TV.

Superman Returns Game

Inspired by the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures feature film and more than 60 years of DC Comics' lore, Superman ReturnsTM: The Videogame will create the ultimate open-world super hero experience. As the Man of SteelTM, you'll hone your unworldly super powers such as Flight, X-Ray Vision, Heat Vision, Super Hearing, Super Strength, Super Speed, and Super Breath to fight villains that only SupermanTM can defeat. Explore your super powers to discover new uses and combinations: use Heat Vision to melt a rogue car or as a focused laser-like beam to cut through thick metal; use Super Breath to move heavy objects or freeze villains into solid ice. You can also combine powers and interact with your environment; for instance, freeze water spouting from a broken fire hydrant into a giant icicle with your Super Breath and use your Super Strength to hurl it at an enemy.

HDTV gaming for non-next-gen gamers

Not ready to open your wallet for next-gen? No worries - you can still enjoy HD gaming on your current console - if you have the right cable and choose the right games. When you are ready for next-gen, rest assured the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 offer genuine hi-def video output for every game, right out of the box. And while Nintendo's Wii won't offer HDTV resolutions (boo!), it will offer widescreen for some games, including the launch title Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

To get widescreen from your prior generation consoles - Xbox, PS2 and the early model Game Cube - you'll need an optional HD cable for playing in true HD. The cable plugs into the component video ports on the back of your set - they're the trio of red, green, and blue RCA type jacks.

But be warned, not all games offer widescreen, also known as 16:9, resolution.

Moyer speech:

This is an excerpt from the Sol Feinstone Lecture on The Meaning of Freedom delivered by Bill Moyers at the United States Military Academy on November 15, 2006.

Thank you for this opportunity. You are a very special audience, one of the most important I have ever addressed, and also one of the hardest. Many of you will be heading for Iraq. I have never been a soldier myself, never been tested under fire, never faced hard choices between duty and feeling, or duty and conscience, under deadly circumstances. I will never know if I have the courage to be shot at, or to shoot back, or the discipline to do my duty knowing the people who dispatched me to kill or be killed had no idea of the moral abyss into which they were plunging me.

I have tried to learn about war from those who know it best: veterans, the real experts.
