Sharp distinction

Playing the ethnic stereotype is just not Lucy Lius style. She goes for roles with a sharp edge like a pregnant woman in her new AIDS drama, writes TAN DAWN WEI.

IN the independent AIDS drama 3 Needles, Lucy Liu has to look heavily pregnant, wear no make-up and speak impeccable Mandarin.

It is not like anything she is used to, but she fulfils all three requirements the last one, imperfectly but competently.

Her role as an ignorant AIDS-stricken black marketeer in rural China who collects blood for sale from peasants is the first time that she has delivered her lines entirely in Mandarin in any of her TV shows and movies.

Liu may be Chinese-American, but for anyone who has cared to track her career, the 38-year-old has not exactly been playing the ethnic card in Hollywood.

Video games: Nintendo's Wii system

The folks at Nintendo are either crazy or crazy genius.

What else can you say about a company that unveils its flagship video game console the same week that global behemoth Sony launches the PS3, a marketing juggernaut that spurred frenzied bidding on eBay, multi-day camping trips to electronics retailers and made people willing to shoot and steal to get their hands on what may be the most highly anticipated video gaming machine ever made?

Sword of the Stars review

If, like me, your only experience of 4X 'til now has been the occasional drunken dalliance with an Aussie beer brand, then you're in for a bit of a treat with Kerberos Productions' Sword of the Stars.

To the initiated of course, 4X stands for eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate, an abbreviated acronym alluding to the multi-faceted, megalomaniacal gameplay on offer in a subgenre of the turn based strategy category. In Sword of the Stars, the 4X on offer is distinctly of the space based variety, with you playing as one of four races bent on galactic domination. .

THE OCTOPUS PROJECT

Fresh off a high desert sojourn to Coachella, the Octopus Project lands its well-honed electrostatic exploratorium in the big room at Emos for whats sure to be a multisensory mind bend. Emergent locals Loxsly exude a futuristic open range vibe by commingling synthesizer and pedal steel, while Ohio-based duo Gil Manteras Party Dream mixes Eighties dance pop with a memorial nod to the vocoded legacy of Zapp frontman/fellow Ohioan Roger Troutman. Darkly hued post-punk quartet A Featherweight Burden bats first. - Greg Beets

Robinson falls on sword

England supremo Rob Andrew insists he will not step into the breach in any capacity as the search begins for Andy Robinson's replacement.

Robinson's painfully drawn-out departure was concluded yesterday afternoon when the England head coach reluctantly stood down after presiding over one of the darkest periods in the nation's rugby history. England lost 13 of their 22 Tests under Robinson with his fate effectively sealed by Saturday's desperate 25-14 defeat by an under-strength South Africa at Twickenham. But negotiations over the 42-year-old's compensation package - he was contracted until June 2008 - meant official confirmation of his removal could not be announced until yesterday (correct). A successor will be appointed but Andrew, Twickenham's director of elite rugby, gave no indication of who is on the RFU's wish-list or what the job title will be.

We Party, We Pray

The lighting is low, candles flicker on the tables and the soft tones of Madeleine Peyroux fill the room. We are shown to our table in the busy restaurant – all clean contemporary lines – and the attentive waiter takes our coats as we sit down. The other tables are made up of couples and groups, all young and discreetly enjoying themselves, the majority probably on dates – a scene repeated in any number of sophisticated London restaurants. Except this isn’t London, this is Tehran and the coats the waiter has just taken constitute part of the .

Paris finalists fear falling at the first hurdle

When the Champions League bunting was being removed from the Stade de France last May and Barcelona danced off into the night with the glittering prize while Arsenal reflected on how close they had come, the last thing on anybody's mind was the idea that next season both teams might flop.

Even before leaving Paris, Barcelona were already planning on doing it all again and again. Arsenal consoled themselves with declarations of their desire to get straight back to the final and go that crucial step further.
