Virtua Fighter 5 Virtua Fighter 5 PS3 Review

Virtua Fighter returns in its fifth incarnation over the last decade, and violence is once again on the agenda. Having paved the way for the 3D fighter genre and for the likes of Tekken and Soul Calibur to follow in its wake, would Virtua Fighter 5 roundhouse kick Sega's flagship fighting game into the next generation on the PS3?

The graphical design is art based rather than true-to-life and you can immediately tell that this looks like a next generation title. The HD resolution is supported up to 720p, so it has not been pushed to the limit, but a lot of time and effort has been put into the characters, environment and backdrops. Speaking of characters, there are now 17 fighters and VF5 includes 2 new combatants from the previous PS2 incarnation. Eileen (using some form of monkey Kung-Fu fighting style) and the Mexican fighting champion 'El Blaze' join a cast of old favourites to battle it out for the fighting crown.

Tekken 5: Dark Ressurection

Tekken fans around the world used to mourn that they would never be able to play the Japanese Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection on their consoles. Namco announced that it was porting the Japanese arcade-only title to the PSP, which is a fantastic game but simply not enough for hardcore fans. Thankfully Namco finally realized the demand for a console version of the game, and in a surprising move released Tekken 5: DR not as a budget title for the PlayStation 2, but as a downloadable title for the PlayStation 3 Network. So how does it fare against the other relatively meager PlayStation Store offerings? So far, it's the saving grace. Looking snazzy Tekken 5: DR’s visuals have been enhanced significantly for the PlayStation 3 version of the game. Built originally on improved PS2 hardware, now running at 1080p, the title looks incredible for a downloadable game.

Namco Bandai profits up more than 70 per cent

Namco Bandai has announced financial results for the year ending March 31, posting a 71 per cent rise in net profits to YEN 24.2 billion (EUR 148.9 million).

The company's games division racked up YEN 138.2 billion (EUR 850 million) in net sales, which were up by 6.4 per cent year-on-year, while operating income increased by 18.6 per cent to reach YEN 11.5 billion (EUR 70.2 million).

Over the course of the year 23.4 million Namco Bandai games were sold, of which 58 per cent were console titles and 42 per cent were handheld. Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for PS2 was the best-selling game with 1.18 million units shifted, followed by Tekken: Dark Resurrection (PSP, 1 million units) and Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop (DS, 871,000 units).

Other top performing titles included Tekken 5 Platinum, Naruto: Ultimate Nintja, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny Plus and Super Dragon Ball Z.
