County combs new location in Reiser hunt

CANYON — Search and rescue teams with dogs and all-terrain vehicles combed both sides of rugged Pinehurst Road in Contra Costa County on Saturday in a new search for the body of 31-year-old Nina Reiser.

Reiser, the mother of two small children, disappeared in Oakland on Sept. 3. Her husband, computer software entrepreneur Hans Reiser, 42, has been charged with her murder. It was a follow-up to the search on the Oakland side of the hills conducted in September, said Capt. Rick Kovar, of the Contra Costa County Sheriff's office. He said about 50 volunteers, sheriff's deputies, members of the Contra Costa Search and Rescue team and others took part in the search.

Kovar said the search was conducted at the request of the Oakland Police, who believe her body may be found in the area.

College Cup: Penalty kicks lift Gauchos past Wake

After his team got by Wake Forest in penalty kicks Saturday afternoon, UC Santa Barbara soccer coach Tim Vom Steeg was asked about the injury status of defender Andy Iro.

"Was Andy hurt, too?'' he asked, looking toward his players. "See, with so many guys going down, I guess I lost track.

"It was that kind of game for us. We couldn't get anything going, couldn't get anything started, and that's a credit to Wake Forest. It was a very tough game and, with all the injuries, we were literally running out of players. At a certain point, you start to wonder if maybe you aren't better off taking your chances in penalty kicks.''

After 110 minutes of grueling, scoreless soccer, the Gauchos (16-7-1) outscored the Demon Deacons 4-3 in penalty kicks, earning a 1-0 win and a rematch with UCLA (14-5-4) at 2 p.m.

Kill Cheerleader in Ottawa

Rememberance Day often conjures up images of, well, remembering those that sacrificed their lives through armed conflict in the name of preserving freedom in the face of oppression over the years. Goat Horn's surprise break-up this past year...well, it doesn't compare, needless to say, as sad as that bit of news was the day I heard it. Then again, I've attended so many Rememberance Day ceremonies over the years that on this particular day it felt awkward to be attending a concert on a day when one should really be in mourning. But that quickly passed. However, for the military personnel that happen to come across this review while on leave, I'll just say that I support the troops and commend them on their bravery despite my reservations on the War On Terror and how it's being planned in some parts.
