Is EA making a Godfather Sequel?

The movie had a sequel and so will the video game! Electronic Arts (EA) is planning to make Godfather II for the next-gen consoles. EA will also use the open-world engine in five different franchises to save costs and make more profits.

NCP analyst Todd Greenwald went to the Electronic Arts studio in Redwood City and spent some time over there. He told Gamesindustry.biz, "We learned that EA is leveraging the momentous amount of development time and costs that went into The Godfather game. The open-world engine was built from the ground up for The Godfather, and is now being used by five different franchises, including The Simpsons. The Godfather 2 is also in development currently, though timing is unknown."

Todd Greenwald informed that EA expect MySims, the new franchise for the Nintendo Wii, to increase their sales figures.

No more idle hands to do the Don's work in 'The Godfather ...

Most video games based on movies stink, so I was highly skeptical about "The Godfather: Blackhand Edition" for the Nintendo Wii.

Electronic Arts pulled it off, seamlessly intertwining the plot of the greatest mafia movie ever made with best attributes of the "Grand Theft Auto" series -- as well as beautifully re-creating New York City in the 1940s.

It's a match made in Hell's Kitchen, capisce?

Previous incarnations of "The Godfather" game were released last year on the PS2, Xbox and PC, but the new "Blackhand Edition" KOs them all. It has 40 more missions, an improved map, spruced-up graphics and a Hit Squad to help you do your dirty work. Even without the extras, the Wii version is tops because gamers use the Wiimote and nunchuk as virtual hands for punching, strangling and shooting.

Godfather engine used for other Wii titles

EA have revealed in an interview that the 'open-world' engine used in The Godfather is being utilised for other titles, including The Simpsons.Shame it looks a bit rubbish, then.Don't get me wrong, some of the aspects of the engine are nice - good explosions, some nice particle effects, and so on - but on the whole it's far too low-resolution in nature to really push Wii forward. That makes it all the more disappointing that EA have chosen to recoup the costs of making The Godfather games by porting the engine over to other franchises, including The Simpsons. The interview also revealed that The Godfather 2 is currently in development, "though timing is unknown."EA's enthusiasm for Wii is commendable, but I can't help but feel that there's still some mad rush to fire out as many titles as possible without ever really trying to push the system.

12:48 EA "misjudged" popularity of Wii say analysts (0)

Mercury News reports that third party developer and publisher, Electronic Arts' underestimation of the Nintendo Wii could eventually come back to haunt the firm as it struggles to support the platform with the same gusto as it has the Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360.

"This transition does seem to be a bit more painful for EA," said Todd Greenwald, financial analyst with Nollenberger Capital Partners, who also believes EA will continue to reign supreme amongst the gaggle of other top third-party software publishers, including the likes of Ubisoft and Activision.

However, other analysts and investors are beginning to question Greenwald's opinion, particularly since EA's rise to the position position as third party market leader was no coincidence after it supported the PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 so doggedly.
