Gamers answer "Call of Duty"

GARNERVILLE - One would think that after shamelessly killing nearly two dozen people with an arsenal of assorted guns and grenades, you would show a little restraint.

But there was only joy in 13-year-old Stephen Berkowitz's eyes as he hoisted his Xbox 360 controller in the air last night at the Haverstraw King's Daughters Library.

"I got 22!" Berkowitz said as he high-fived friends.

Not bad for 10 minutes of simulated wartime carnage. The pixilated bloodshed was part of the library's "Call of Duty 2" tournament, at which 25 North Rockland sixth- through 12th-graders competed for a copy of a "Call of Duty 3" Xbox 360 game and a $25 Best Buy gift card.

It was the third time this year that the library hosted such an event, said Patrice Gottfried, the library's director of teen services.

Intel's G965 embedded graphics stink - official

AMD SET UP a nice demo of embedded graphics for all to see and play with. The thought was that all the CPU power in the world does not matter if your GPU stinks. And, as we have been pointing out, the G965 does stink.

Let's be clear here. The G965 is not a gamer's platform, it is a low-cost, low-power way to get a livable amount of pixels onto your LCD. Do not expect FEAR to run a zillion FPS, or for Crysis to even run for that matter, it is all about the top 10 games.

And Lego Star Wars is a perennial favorite. They are a year or more old, way behind the curve, and sell in the millions just like the embedded graphics chips.

Dark Messiah patched ( News )

Valve reports that there's a patch available through Steam for Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, which should sort out a number of tedious bugs. And if you bought the game in a box rather than an internet, you can download a patch for that too.

So what's sorted? Well, here are a few highlights: "Indestructible shields are now really indestructible." "Fixed teleporting that could occur when using lockpick." "Fixed invisible wall present on level 7." And "Fixed Percy getting stuck in a window."

Which reminds me - Rob moved house last week, and, well, if you couldn't get a sofa in through a front door, would your first instinct be to try and raise it through the first floor window using ropes? Somebody should patch him.

Online gaming with no fees. In the face of stiff competition from the likes of World of Warcraft and Everquest, that has become ArenaNet's maxim since the release of the first Guild Wars game, and it's a phrase that appears to be going down well with the punters, since we have just witnessed the appearance of the second standalone expansion in the space of 12 months.

Rutgers: Football isn't the only game in town

An early September Daily Record editorial wished the Rutgers University football team success (as do we), and expressed what has so far proved to be an unfortunately incorrect view that Rutgers "football helps other sports," and that football revenue can hopefully support teams that Rutgers has "scaled back."

These latter sentiments ignore certain critical facts pertaining to Rutgers' recent decision to eliminate six varsity teams: men's swimming, men's tennis, men's lightweight and heavyweight crew and men's and women's fencing.

While Rutgers' football team has experienced more success than the authors of the editorial could have reasonably imagined, the fact remains that for the fiscal year ending June 30, according to budget data from Rutgers, the football team actually lost $3.4 million, even after receiving $1.2 million for its Insight Bowl appearance last season.
