EA Looks To Continued Growth

There's no doubt that EA is desperate to push original franchises over the course of the coming year, with the likes of SKATE and Army of Two set to form a key part of the publisher's ever-expanding raft of titles, joining the likes of Need for Speed, Madden, and The Sims. But after a twelve month period where the net income decreased dramatically from $236 million (118.4 million) in fiscal year 2006 to $76 million (38.1 million) - EA cites five studio acquisitions as one of the main causes of the drop - the publisher is preparing for a somewhat sizable bag of titles between now and the end of March next year. But a drop in income caused by the acquisitions of Digital Illusions, Mythic Entertainment, and Headgate, isn't the only headache experienced by EA over the past year. The extended transition period to next titles, which culminated in the launch of PlayStation3 and Wii, also meant that the publisher's revenues in the fourth quarter suffered, dropping by 4% from $641 million (321.6 million) in Q4 2006 to $613 million (307.6 million).

Gamebox shift hits EA's bottom line

No. 1 videogame publisher Electronic Arts saw its net income fall by more than half as heavy spending on the transition to next-generation consoles hit its bottom line.

Net revenue was down 4% at $613 million in the first quarter, the fourth on EA's fiscal calendar.

Excluding an accounting change, net income fell 56% to $19 million.

For the full fiscal year ending March 31, revenue rose 5% to $3.1 billion. Net income, excluding the accounting change, fell 18% to $247 million.

Drop was due to higher costs, especially in research and development, which can be largely attributed to the transition to the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii.

Bestselling titles in the past year were "Madden NFL '07," "Need for Speed Carbon," "FIFA '07," "The Sims 2: Pets," "The Sims 2," "Need for Speed: Most Wanted" and "2006 FIFA World Cup," all of which sold more than 3 million units worldwide.

My Sims DS and Wii Play

My Sims has such a different gameplay feel between the DS and the Wii that I think you could love one and hate the other. Since the DS versions seems very Animal Crossing-esque, I'll have to love that Wii and hate the DS version, I suspect. Brian Crecente
