Internet Home Alliance Announces Results of Laundry Time Pilot (24 ...

New research from Internet Home Alliance, a cross-industry network of leading companies advancing the connected home market, promises that an "intelligent" laundry solution can, indeed, simplify and save time on this time-consuming home chore. According to the results of the Alliance's Laundry Time Pilot, an eight-week, real-world test of a connected laundry room, Laundry Time is a viable solution that represents an improvement over regular washer and dryer functionality. Pilot participants said that connecting washers and dryers to a central home system makes sense and promises to be a beneficial component in a home control system. Remote notification stood out as a key benefit, enabling participants to handle the laundry chore more efficiently thus processing more loads during the day. Conducted in three Atlanta homes from May 30 through September 7, 2006, the study involved products, services and intelligence from some of the nation's top technology and consumer products companies including Whirlpool Corporation, Hewlett Packard, Microsoft Corp., Panasonic and Procter & Gamble.

Down on the farm - Sky Tower pilot talks

Pilot David Turnock was so devastated at his marriage break-up that he threatened to fly into Auckland's Sky Tower on election night last year. In his first interview, he talks to Nicola Boyes about depression, lost love and being behind bars.

The videos on former pilot David Turnock's office shelf are predictable: Top Gun and An Officer and a Gentleman - dashing aviators who won the girl.

He has seen them dozens of times and, at 34, Turnock is New Zealand's own aviation celebrity of sorts. He lost his girl and nearly his life on national television on election night last year.

September 17 was not significant, he says, it just happened to be the day he stole a plane from Ardmore Airport, threatened to fly into Auckland's Sky Tower and finally ditched into the sea off St Heliers.

Pilot of crashed F-16 listed as killed in action

An Air Force pilot whose F-16 crashed near Baghdad last week is now listed as "killed in action," according to a military news release Sunday.

The U.S. military reclassified Maj. Troy L. Gilbert's status from "duty status whereabouts unknown" to KIA on Saturday following DNA testing, the news release said.

The military believes he was unable to eject and died in Monday's crash. The cause is still under investigation. (Watch what U.S. military found at scene of Monday's crash )

A total of 2,894 U.S. military personnel have died in the Iraq war, including seven civilians working for the Defense Department.

Gilbert's family issued a statement Wednesday praising him as a husband, father and military officer and noting that at the time of the crash, he was protecting the lives of other service members.

Props to jets -- pioneer pilot flew in three wars

As a kid, Hal Johnson wanted to be a fighter pilot. When he joined the Army Air Corps in 1943, they made him a B-24 "Liberator" bomber pilot.

"By the time I graduated from B-24 training and was ready to go overseas, I was told they needed pilots to fly B-29 'Superfortresses.' So I went back and trained to be a B-29 pilot. I just completed B-29 training when the war ended," said the 82-year-old Port Charlotte man, who lives in Southport Square.

By then, 1st Lt. Johnson decided to make the Air Force a career.

"I liked airplanes, and I liked my association in the Air Force," he said with a smile more than six decades after he signed up as an 18-year-old aviation cadet. "After the war I joined the 81st Fighter Group of the 94th Squadron, 7th Air Force based at Wheeler Field in Hawaii.

Mrs Bingley says her husband was "wonderful father"

The wife of the Blackhawk helicopter pilot killed in Wednesday's crash on the HMAS Kanimbla has released a statement praising her husband as a wonderful partner and father.

Melissa Bingley faced a press conference today to talk about her husband.

But Mrs Bingley says she will not give interviews in the future, and would like the media to respect her privacy.

The statement reads:

"Mark is a wonderful man, a wonderful father; even if it was for a short period of time. Mark is an amazing pilot who wanted to fly from the moment he was born – everything he did was aimed at becoming a pilot. When he did a course, he didn’t just meet the requirements, he excelled. He loved the military and the opportunities it opened up to him. He moved from infantry to aviation and loved the chance to live and fly in the United States as well as the operations he has participated in around the world.

F-16 pilot downed in Iraq listed as KIA

An American pilot whose F-16 fighter jet went down in Iraq was listed as killed in action following DNA analysis of remains recovered at the crash site, the U.S. Air Force said Sunday.

Maj. Troy L. Gilbert, 34, was supporting troops fighting in Anbar province, where many of the country's Sunni-Arab insurgent groups operate. Videotape footage obtained by Associated Press Television News after the crash appeared to show the wreckage of the F-16CG in a field and a tangled parachute nearby.

Remains recovered at the crash site 20 miles north of Baghdad were identified as Gilbert's, the Air Force said.

U.S. forces investigating the crash have said insurgents reached the site before American forces could. The cause of the crash is under investigation, but officials said they did not believe Gilbert was shot down.
