Honduras bans violent Games

At the tail end of last week, it was revealed that the Honduran Congress had voted unanimously to ban all violent videogames and toys. They believe that removing these aggressive ‘influences' will help stop the rising levels of violent crime in the South American country.

Games to be removed from shelves before the law begins in June 2003 include Resident Evil, Turok, Duke Nukem, Shadowman, Quake, Doom, Street Fighter and Perfect Dark. Toy weapons and similar playthings are also for the chop.

The new law is awaiting final approval from the Honduran President, though it is predicted he will agree to this sweeping legislation. Whether or not this will provoke some kind of response from the masses, particular the nation's gaming fraternity, will be interesting to see, but perhaps more interesting still will be whether any discernable decline in crime will become apparent as a result of the law.

Turok Evolution

Acclaim's PC release of last years console version of Turok Evolution doesn't need luck. Turok Evolution needs a miracle. It is dire.

Most gamers have probably heard of the Turok series, thanks to its strong debut back on the N64. Nowadays though I don't think it is unfair to say that it is not held in the highest of regard, particularly among PC gamers. Turok Evolution is probably, and hopefully, the final nail in the coffin of this franchise. Were it simply a mediocre shooter to be forgotten amidst the jungle of others it might not be so bad. But no, they've released a clearly out of date buggy mess. From the very moment the game loads up it was bug, followed by bug, followed by a hopping dinosaur, then more bugs.

Pressing Buttons 11.29.06: Are We Peaking?

It's human nature to want more. Rarely in life will we ever remain truly content with our current situation. A relationship, a career, life in general... the anticipation of what's to come is what drives us. It's is no different with the video game world. This past month we witnessed the launches of the Playstation 3 and the Nintendo Wii... but what's next? I'm not talking short term. I mean, what's the Video Game Industry going to be like in say 10 years? Have you ever stopped and thought that maybe, just maybe, we've hit our peak? After putting some thought into it, maybe that's not as ridiculous of a thought as you would like to think. Take a look at just how much video games have changed within the last 25 years. Hell, think about have much they've changed within the last 5 years. We as gamers have become spoiled by the benefits of constant-bettering technology.

My Gaming Block Austin, Part 1: MMOs, Pimped-Out Studios

Austin is the home base of most massively multiplayer game development in the U.S. and host city to an eccentric cast of game makers that includes the most critically acclaimed studio outside Japan. Also home to Dell, the University of Texas at Austin and the South by Southwest Music and Media Conference, the city is as creatively vibrant as it is proficient at high-tech, making it a hotbed of game development for more than two decades. For Gamer's Week 2.0, MTV News spent a week in Austin to soak in the game culture. Here are five things we learned as we visited My Gaming Block Austin (and check back Tuesday for five more):

Making games in Austin can turn you into a real-life Indiana Jones.

A key stop on the tour is NCsoft, where lead game designer Richard Garriott now plies his trade (see "Video Game Hall Of Fame Inducts 'Satanic Perverter' ").

NCAA March Madness 07 demo

And yet another demo on the Xbox Live Marketplace, this time in the US and Canada only. It's another EA game, and if you've never heard of it before (I can imagine that, if you live outside the US), it's another basketball sim, this time it's about college basketball and called NCAA March Madness 07.

The demo is almost 1GB large (908.67MB to be exact) and this time it's also available for Silver members immediately. And that's all entirely free! (I thought I'd inform you about it, because you never know with EA)

If you don't live in the US or Canada, but can't wait to play the game, you should check this out in our Wiki. It tells you exactly how to create you're own US account even if you live in Europe or Asia. (Mind that this procedure is a violation of the XBOX Live Terms of Service.
