GameRanger goes Universal

GameRanger, the popular Mac game finding and chat service, is now available as a Universal binary. The version 4.6 release is in circulation; GameRanger users will be automatically updated on their next connection.

GameRanger is used by commercial, shareware and freeware games as a game matching service — GameRanger users can join or host online games, access master lists of servers, and chat with each other. The service is offered in a basic free form or a premium tier that provides additional capabilities, such as in-game voice chat, a ranking system, buddy list groups and more.

Besides Universal binary support for PowerPC and Intel-based Macs, GameRanger 4.6 also contains several other changes, including support for Age of Empires III, Civilization IV: Warlords and Imperial Glory, improved network transport system for games including Raven Shield, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake, and more.

Call of Duty 2

Motherland. Charging in with all guns blazing won't do any good either. 'Call of Duty 2' refuses to glorify war. Sometimes, you need to take cover and let your comrades handle the Nazi's hiding on the floor above you. Sometimes, the only dignified course of action is a slow but steady retreat.

D-Link DGL-4100 Broadband Gaming Router, 4-Port Gigabit Switch

I hated replacing my L*nksys BEFVP41, because it forced me to use a software VPN solution vs. the build in hardware crypto solution. The bottom line is that I needed a router that didn't need extremely frequent reboots, primarily after (more like *during*) bittorrent sessions. B.Shock mentions upgrading with a 2006.1.11 firmware update, but there is no such update. I'm currently running firmware v1.7 with game fuel activated and appropriate rules set up. I also run a home web and e-mail (linux based) server, 3 client machines and a laptop. The UPnP implementation is much more solid than the previous router as well. In addition, I've had torrent running, usenet binary grabs, playing Unreal Tournament 2004 online while my wife was on Skype (w/ video) to Europe with friends with no issues. I've had zero reboots of the router.

One day, the Birds of Prey

BEAVER CREEK - Skier Thomas Walsh wants to become a triathlon champion and president. But first, the 11-year-old hopes to best the World Cup and Olympics.

How does he plan to achieve these goals?

Hard work, he says.

"It's no easy game," Walsh said. "It's no daily TV show sitting on the couch. You just have to work as hard as you can."

The Avon resident and sixth grade Vail Mountain student trains in the off season for triathlons, one of which he won last year, and skis in the winter. In the end, he said, confidence is key.

"You have to be on top of the game," he said. "You have a mental and physical challenge as well. You have to always know you can do it."

'Starts in the valley'
As racers descend upon the Birds of Prey course at Beaver Creek, several local youngsters aspire to one day race the World Cup circuit - a daunting task by some accounts.

Xavier brings soccer title back home

MILWAUKEE The Xavier boys' soccer team learned what it was like to lose at the state tournament level in 2005.

Faced with that same possibility with three minutes left in Saturday's WIAA Division 2 state championship match, the Hawks decided that was not going to happen.

With Ross Dreier scoring the game-tying goal at 77:08 and Adam Lindsay scoring the game winner at 9:27 of overtime, the Hawks defeated Grafton 2-1 to win the state title at Uihlein Soccer Park.

The state soccer title is Xavier's third in the last four years, with the other titles coming in 2003 and 2004.

"For last year's seniors and my family, it's just amazing to bring this back again," Lindsay said. "It's just a great, great feeling."

Jake Tache, who scored the decisive goal in the semifinal win over Catholic Memorial on Friday, described winning the title as a combination of unreal and awesome.
