The New Console Wars 411 Roundtable: Part II

Welcome to the long overdue second part of the 411 Games: New Console Wars roundtable. Blame work, school, and my computer breaking down the exact same day in which I was going to post this. But fear not, I am back with a new video card and a fixed Ethernet port. Part II focuses of our writers opinions on all three consoles. Without further ado, here we go! NOTE: All writers opinions were collected before the Wii and PS3 launches. Armando Rodriguez: Self proclaimed PREVIEW KING, author of Cheap Gaming 101 Microsoft Xbox 360 - I think the 360 is the best deal right now. It has a one year advantage, which means that there is a wide variety of games to choose from and with long awaited releases like Halo 3, Gears of War, Forza 2 and Fable 2 coming soon, it is going to get better. Sure, it is not as powerful as the PS3, but power doesnt equal quality.

Kill Cheerleader in Ottawa

Rememberance Day often conjures up images of, well, remembering those that sacrificed their lives through armed conflict in the name of preserving freedom in the face of oppression over the years. Goat Horn's surprise break-up this past year...well, it doesn't compare, needless to say, as sad as that bit of news was the day I heard it. Then again, I've attended so many Rememberance Day ceremonies over the years that on this particular day it felt awkward to be attending a concert on a day when one should really be in mourning. But that quickly passed. However, for the military personnel that happen to come across this review while on leave, I'll just say that I support the troops and commend them on their bravery despite my reservations on the War On Terror and how it's being planned in some parts.

Conscience Keeper (Nov 25 To Dec 2)

Crime against women and children is continuing to grow in our society. The week from Nov 25 - Dec 3 witnessed many such heinous crimes. Domestic violence and poverty as well as rape were some such gory incidents that occurred.

UN launches campaign to end violence against women

New York, Nov 25: The United Nations today launched a major campaign aimed to raise awareness about violence against women worldwide and seek vigorous steps to end it. The 16-day campaign will focus on bride burning, sexual violence as a weapon of war, genital mutilation, date rape, child marriage, gender-based violence and honour killing, among other abuses. The launching of the campaign coincides with the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Dalit girl gets education rights under Domestic Violence Act

Jaipur, Nov 25: A court here provided relief to a 20-year-old Dalit college girl under the Domestic Violence Act by allowing her to continue her studies without interference from her parents and relatives.

The Sri Lankan government's broadcast stranglehold

Colombo --- The Sri Lankan government's suspension of Raja FM on Nov. 9 has raised more concerns about the absence of transparency and due process in the government's dealings with stations that are not supported by the state. Similar government actions have come to characterise Sri Lanka's broadcast liberalisation process over the last 15 years.

It is also a firm reminder that the once-dreaded cultural police and moral guardians are back, wearing new robes of extreme nationalism and fundamentalism. The ban of the private radio channel is merely the latest in a series of assaults on freedom of expression.

Raja FM is owned by Colombo Communication Private Limited, one of nearly two dozen commercial channels that crowd the FM bandwidth. The government said it shut down the channel because it "broadcast anti social and extremely repulsive and vulgar material that could corrupt the society, specially [sic] the younger generation." The Ministry of Mass Media and Information claimed it "received a large number of complaints from the intellectuals, religious leaders, media personnel and society leaders," and thus banned the radio channel under a 40-year-old law, the Societal Good Conduct Act No.

Pierce Brosnan returns in a superspy avatar

Washington, Nov 19: The James Bond franchise may have returned this week without Pierce Brosnan, but it seems the former 007 can't get enough of playing a spy.

The Matador actor is reportedly lined up to star in a new spy franchise called Spy vs. Stu, but unfortunately, it's a comedy.

Keith Mitchell and Allie Dvorin wrote the original script about a guy named Stu who plans to propose to his girlfriend on an island vacation, only to get unexpected competition from a super spy (Brosnan) who just finished saving the world, reports Hollywood Reporter.

The 53-year-old played Bond on four occasions before being replaced by Daniel Craig in new 007 movie Casino Royale.

Realistic war strategy worthy of a medal

Veterans of World War II video games might be tempted to write off Company of Heroes as just another retread in a genre already saturated with Battlefield: 1942, Call of Duty 2 and Medal of Honor. But listen up, private: These arent your daddys toy soldiers. The real-time strategy game begins as the Allied forces storm Omaha Beach on D-Day. From there, its up to you to guide the soldiers of Able Company through several well-defined missions as they slug it out against the Nazis across France. As players capture territory and strategic locations, the ability to deploy personnel and armored vehicles is increased, as is the ability to build support and defense fortifications. Troops and armor come in many stripes, each with its own strengths and special abilities. Riflemen, mortar squads, howitzers, snipers, halftracks, bazooka-toting rangers and Sherman tanks are just some of the weapons in the arsenal, and most are upgradable.

Bush's Private Armies, Seen from Within

Despite its initial efforts to behave responsibly following the attacks of September 11th, America has turned the War on Terror into a Wild West story for the 21st century. Complete with grizzled bad guys, "Wanted" posters, lawless badlands, and a straight-shooting sheriff in cowboy boots, this violent burlesque bears all the hallmarks of a classic western. It should come as no surprise, then, that hired guns have appeared in Baghdad, assisting the forces of good in their fight against evil. Yet far from their lone-ranging Hollywood counterparts, America's modern day gunslingers roll in Humvees, carry AK-47s, and work for corporations contracted by the United States Government.

These military contractors are the subject of Robert Young Pelton's Licensed to Kill. The book illustrates how the presence of soldiers-for-hire in Iraq and Afghanistan exemplifies the changing nature of the way America conducts war.

Anti-microbial 'paint' kills flu, bacteria

A new "antimicrobial paint" developed at MIT can kill influenza viruses that land on surfaces coated with it, potentially offering a new weapon in the battle against a disease that kills nearly 40,000 Americans per year.

If applied to doorknobs or other surfaces where germs tend to accumulate, the new substance could help fight the spread of the flu, says Jianzhu Chen, MIT professor of biology.

"Because of the limited efficacies with existing (flu) vaccines and antivirals, there's room for other, complementary approaches," said Chen, one of the authors of a report on the new material that appeared Nov. 13 in the online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In a typical year, 200,000 people in the United States are hospitalized from influenza virus infection, and 36,000 of them die, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
