Vanguard: Saga of Heroes New Combat Trailer Released

Sony Online Entertainment and Sigil Games Online have released a new trailer featuring combat from the upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game, "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes." The footage features just a few of the low level creatures in the vast world of Telon that beginning players must battle using an arsenal of weaponry and magical spells. Slicing through massive armies of fearsome denizens, players will explore three enormous continents and advance their characters along the path of their choosing. Lush environments reminiscent of oil paintings will immerse players in a highly-detailed seamless world filled with mystery and intrigue. "Vanguard: Saga of Heroes" is currently in closed beta, and scheduled to release Q1 of 2007.

News Roundup: Neverwinter NHL Nights

Stoked Rider, based on snowboarding's free-ride legend, Tommy Brunner, can scope out spacey action on the "Alaska Alien" trailer. Bionical Heroes bolts together a trailer, and another specifically for the kids. Ten Ton Hammer tinkered around and captured a couple exclusive screens from Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Interviews, Reviews Killer Betties gets a dialogue going with the development team behind Neverwinter Nights 2. And they also bat around a review of Viva Pinata for the X360. Patches, Mods Don't be surprised if you've never heard of Wrestling Spirit 2. And don't be surprised if you're not quite looking for it's 1.1 update. Warhammer: Mark of Chaos puts the pen in your hand with its just-released map editor. The outrageously well-received Company of Heroes is patched up a little more. Here's 1.0 --> 1.3, or the smaller 1.2 --> 1.3.

Poor script plus bad voice acting equals mediocre title

We know that there a lot of games out there who sport excellent storylines. But for now, whenever we talk of such, PSP title Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure and MMO Vanguard: Saga of Heroes readily comes to mind. Sigil Games and Mastiff LLC have spoken recently about the scripts and voice acting for their respective titles.

But the point of the matter is that, every game for every genre on every platform should be concerned about scripts and voice acting. Andy Emery of audio specialist company, Side, pointed out the relationship between the two: "There are many factors that contribute to poor quality dialogue in games, but by far and away a poor script is the biggest single culprit."

While it is true that the graphics and the physics aspects of games nowadays have been superb, the above mentioned are lagging behind.

Vanguard Saga of Heroes Hands-on

November 03, 2006 - Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is being put together by Sigil, a core group of folks that were part of the original EverQuest, including the well-known Brad McQuaid and Jeff Butler. While we hadn't seen or heard much about Vanguard in the last year, recently a few movies have been surfacing that have piqued our interest. Vanguard purports to have several distinguishing features, including very large zones, player-made boats and a deep crafting system. On Halloween, Sigil's Jeff Butler and April Jones showed up at our offices, and we managed to rescue them from the Fear Factor Food Eating contest going on in our office lunchroom to get a demo of what's happening in Vanguard.

Right away, Butler showed us a geared-up warrior character mounted on his flying wyrm mount atop a cliff, several thousand feet above the sea, and we understand the game is ambitious.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (PC)

Sigil Games Online, in creating Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, haven't done anything drastically different from other massively multiplayer online titles, but in this case it's not particularly important. What matters is the manner in which this recipe has been prepared. As I have been lucky enough to see, this pizza looks to be palatable indeed.

So, "what is Vanguard?" Surprisingly, not as many people seem to know the answer to that question as I would have thought. Well wonder no more, ye unenlightened masses! Simply put, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is a massively multiplayer fantasy-themed online role playing game created by a team of developers with an illustrious pedigree; Sigil Games Online was founded by two ex-members of the Verant Interactive team, known for their (in)famous title EverQuest.
