Massively Multiplayer Online Game

While starting up Archlord, something that takes some time thanks to the clumsy registration process, a dark force seems to infest you. Somewhere in the back of your head a suggestion rises, some sort of telepathic vision of what's waiting for you. A MMORPG apparently, yes, but one that can be described as the Anti-WoW. A MMORPG that stands for everything plain evil, dark and devilish to the genre, an example of everything that can go wrong, a sum of misses with as result a game that sucks every, and I'm saying évery, little grain of gaming fun out of you already after the first seconds of playing as if it were a whory breed from hell, obsessed with prematurily ending your life force. I may be overdoing things a bit, but walk with me. Such games ask a lot of you: both financially as well as when it comes to time consumption, this genre will ask sometimes more than you're willing to give.

Warhammer Online: 40K... of screenies

Were you expecting us to talk about the futuristic spinoff of Warhammer? Nope, the 40K here is the weight of the screens from GOA's Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning that landed on our desks (our HDDs, to be exact) this morning. We even have a bit of the backstory behind Thunder Mountain, that big bad Mt. Doom look-a-like that is our banner image for this article. Now, why do we have the sudden urge for cream strawberries and challenging the Dark Lord of this land to come out and face justice - oops, wrong fantasy story!

Thunder Mountain (a.k.a. Karag Dron to Dwarven tongues) holds a central place between the Dwarven capital of Karaz-a-Karak and the greenskin stronghold of Eight Peaks, which means it's hotly contested between these two forces. Whoever can control the mount also controls the prime invasion route to the enemy's capital.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning Empire Q&A - Part 3

December 01, 2006 - Befitting its name, Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning takes place within a world where armed conflict is constant and ubiquitous. The subtitle refers to a desperate period for the two contending sides, each comprising three playable factions drawn from Games Workshop's internationally popular fantasy-themed universe created over two decades ago. What's more, there are longstanding racial enmities among them. A burning mutual hatred exists between the honorable Dwarves and their neighbors, the brutish Orcs. The Human Empire is relentlessly threatened by the mutant forces of Chaos, while the patrician Elves face the daunting menace of their evil Dark Elf brethren.

Warhammer Online: It's all about the "Empire"

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is EA Mythic's upcoming MMORPG based on the Warhammer Fantasy universe. Surely, fans of the Warhammer series would be waiting in line for this game. While comparison to World of Warcraft, or perhaps Dark Age of Camelot (also by Mythic) is imminent, the important question is what will set the game apart from other MMOs. If you ask us, that would be Design Manager Paul Barnett explaining the human Empire faction in a three-minute animated monologue. But that's just us.

Seriously, we've never seen someone talk about the Warhammer Empire faction as enthusiastically as Barnett had in this video prepared by IGN. Watching it takes us back to the time when storytelling is king of kiddie entertainment.

Barring the theatrics and heavy accent, Barnett sums up the Empire as:

Germanic, middle ages, it's people who're living at the end of times..it's the best bits about Monty Python's Holy Grail mixed with everything about middle European medieval fantasy.

In the company of thousands of other players, you can explore, trade, fight and die as you try to carve out a reputation for yourself as a tough warrior, powerful caster or cunning thief.
