Retro games come to PlayStation 3

US PlayStation 3 owners can increase their library of available games after Sony rolled out an update which allows the next-generation gaming console to play first-generation PlayStation games.

The version 1.70 update means that users can now download PlayStation format software that is compatible with the PS3. Downloaded games can be accessed via the XMB media bar home menu.

The same also goes for compatible games previously purchased for use on the PlayStation Portable, which are now compatible with the PS3.

PlayStation Portable games that have already been purchased can be downloaded to the PS3 without additional cost, although newly compatible PS1 titles are priced at $5.99.

Unfortunately the new update is not yet available to European PlayStation 3 owners.

WipEout Pulse: We can't flippin' wait!

Sitting on our desk this morning was a neat envelope from those nice chaps at the SCEE PR team, within which we found this brilliant teaser for WipeOut Pulse. Now you might not be as excited as we are, but if you also hammered the PSP launch title until your batteries cried out in pain, downloaded all the update packs and fancy yourself as somewhat of a futuristic rally champ, then WipEout Pure is going to be a little slice of racing bliss when it arrives later this year. According to our release list it's still due out in September - so there's another one to add to you big end-of-year buy roster. .

Interview Drops More WipeOut Pulse Details

The WipeOut series is about ready to speed onto the PSP, and will eventually find its way to the PS3 as well. Thanks to a recent interview over at Eurogamer, we've got some more details concerning the PSP installment, WipeOut Pulse.

They're talking all about improved controls (we thought the control in these games was pretty damn good to begin with, but whatever), alternative track designs, downloading our own MP3s for new music, and even a sweet "create-a-campaign" mode! The interview also touches on the fact that the Disruptor weapon (featured in the PS1's WipeOut XL) has been discarded, but it's being replaced by several new weapons. We don't have the names for them just yet, but we've heard that one can mess with your HUD...we're not sure if that would be useless or uber-frustrating.

New Information on WipeOut Pulse for the PSP

WipeOut Pure was received as one of the best PSP launch titles and one of the best games on the handheld till this day. The game featured excellent graphics, control, and downloadable content. Well Sony now plans on releasing a new WipeOut on the PSP in for the form of WipeOut Pulse. EuroGamer recently held an interview with Clark Davies the designer of this anticipated title for the PSP. According to Davies the game will feature improved controls over WipeOut Pure. Davies went on to state: "The handling is smoother; the ships are more evenly balanced. We're confident that the control is the best and most accessible the series has seen to date." The game will maintain several features from the previous version of the game such as the weapons absorption ability. Fans of the Disruptor will be sad to hear that they are taking the weapon out of the newest incarnation of the series.
